After decades of promise, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are the first nanocarbon to have seemingly found a killer application. CNTs are being incorporated into lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), providing improved conductive pathways and anchorage sites, alongside enabling thicker electrodes leading to greater energy density. This successful adoption can be seen in the major expansions announced by notable players that are planned for the near future or already underway. IDTechEx believe that the next decade will see the demand from the energy storage sector drive the commercialisation of CNTs, with the maturing supply chain opening up opportunities beyond the energy storage market.
MWCNTs will dominate the LiB space, but opportunities are emerging for other members of the CNT family such as SWCNTs, VACNTs, hybrid products and yarn/sheets. These materials are at different points on the path to commercialisation and have a range of potential applications from next-generation semiconductors to quantum computing.
